Review:  Sherlock Holmes (Movie - 2009)
by P. Kristen Enos

(Originally posted Jan 17, '10.)

What It's About:

The latest interpretation of the Sherlock Holmes universe with Robert Downey, Jr. as the detective and Jude Law as the doctor.

My Real Thoughts On It:

I only went to see it 'cuz gay guy best friend wanted to see Robert Downey, Jr. shirtless, and I figured it would be a somewhat intelligent and entertaining couple of hours.

The movie definitely lived up to expectations of a very action-oriented, male-buddy movie with both men having their independent female problems.  My only real criticism about it is that while I really like Robert Downey, Jr. as an actor, his portrayals tend to be A LOT "Robert Downey, Jr." and not as important to be the actual interpretation of the character.  (I think "Iron Man" suffers from the same thing.)  But he's entertaining if you're comfortable with that expectation.

Now, there is also an obvious tone in the movie that more than once explores the unusually... "close" behavior of the men.  With many scenes and conversations that could only be viewed as "domestic".  So when I expected to be completely passive in my viewing of the movie, I had to admit my eyebrows were raised more than once in those moments.  But even with that, I'm not sure I would willingly see it again.  Once was enough.

Oh, and uber-macho fans can be comforted that the two men do a lot of beating people to a pulp.  So they can view view those moments as two men who just don't know how to express basic care and affection...  if they're desperate for a completely straight interpretation.  (cough)
