What It's About:
A movie musical where iconic Italian movie director
Guido Contini is at a professional and creative
crossroads, faced with having to start production of
his latest film without a script or even a plot.
Desperate for inspiration, he turns to the various
women in his life.
My Real Thoughts On It:
This is a great movie
if you love musicals with tremendous opportunities for
actresses to knock out show stopping numbers one
after the other. All of the performances are
top-notch, including Rob Marshal's cinematic
interpretation. I totally recommend seeing it
in the theater if possible.
However, the actual story is
its biggest flaw. It has
several moments of tedium for a lesbian feminist
given that it is about a man who makes choices that
ends up using and hurting the women in his life.
I spent the most of the moments watching his despair
and thinking "And I'm supposed to give a beep why?"
Lovable cad male characters have no substantial
appeal for someone who has no interest in such
things in real life, nevermind for "entertainment".
And most of the female characters are barely
fleshed-out stereotypes. The only thing that really redeems the movie for me
is that he is ultimately held accountable for it,
instead of treated with some sort of macho
glorification.
Now I totally admit that I
plan to get the special edition blu-ray DVD loaded
with extras that
comes out. But I do also admit that when
Guido's having an extended moment of despair, I'll
probably be multi-tasking on my laptop.
