"The Color Purple" (1985 US Movie/Stage Musical)

Summary:
Based on the novel by Alice Walker, this follows the story of Celie Harris, a very, very young African-American girl in the very oppressed Southern America in the 1900's to the 1940's.

Review:
This is one of those works that while I was aware of them when they first debuted, I never got around to checking them out. In fact, I only saw a touring version of the musical a couple of years ago, and I finally watched the movie last month after buying the cheap blu ray version.

Now that I have actually seen both versions, I'm a little embarrassed that it took me so long to check it out. It's not just about obvious subject of racial oppression, it also delves into issues of sexism, different forms of abuse, and class. Definitely worth while if you have not seen either forms. Though I will admit I did like the musical version better but I'm a show queen and that's probably my bias.
